Storage is easy to overlook because a used PC can boot quickly even when its solid-state drive has warning signs. Before paying, confirm the exact drive model, capacity, health data, temperature, and real performance. This is a deeper condition check than the capacity advice in our RAM and SSD guide. It applies to SATA and NVMe solid-state drives in Windows desktops and laptops. It does not guarantee future life, but it can expose obvious wear and misleading listings.

Identify every installed drive first

Open Disk Management to see all physical capacity and partitions, then use a SMART utility such as CrystalDiskInfo to read the exact model numbers. A listing that says 2TB may combine a small SSD with a slow hard drive. Check whether Windows is installed on the advertised SSD and whether unallocated space is hiding. Search the model afterward to confirm whether it is NVMe or SATA, its warranty class, and whether the capacity matches the label.

Read SMART health without trusting one percentage

Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology, called SMART, records drive condition. Review percentage used, available spare, critical warnings, media errors, unsafe shutdowns, power-on hours, and total host writes. Different brands calculate health differently, so 99 percent is not a universal grade. Any critical warning, rapidly rising error count, or available-spare alert is more important than a green dashboard. Take a photo of the full report so you can compare the model's manufacturer limits later.

Put total writes and power-on hours in context

Total bytes written should be compared with the drive's rated endurance, often listed as terabytes written. A high number is not automatically dangerous on a high-endurance drive, while the same number may be significant on an entry model. Power-on hours reveal use but not abuse. Many unsafe shutdowns can come from a flaky power supply or forced resets. Ask what workload created the writes, especially if the seller used the PC for video scratch files, servers, or constant downloads.

Test speed, temperature, and free-space behaviour

Run a short, reputable storage benchmark only with the seller's permission. Compare sequential and random results with realistic reviews for that interface. A PCIe 4.0 drive can run at PCIe 3.0 speed in an older slot without being defective. Watch temperature during the test and check that the SSD has free space. Nearly full, overheated, or cache-limited drives can slow sharply. Do not run huge write tests at a quick meetup because they add wear and waste time.

  2. Capture the complete SMART screen and all warnings.
  3. Run a small read-focused benchmark with enough free space.
  4. Confirm temperatures recover after the test.

Look for counterfeit or swapped storage

Marketplace systems sometimes contain a cheaper drive than the ad or a relabelled device that reports false capacity. Match the software model to the physical label when the slot is accessible. Warning signs include a generic model string, capacity errors during file copies, implausibly low speeds, or firmware tools that do not recognize the device. A clean Windows installation does not prove the drive is genuine. If identity is uncertain, value the PC as if storage needs immediate replacement.

Convert SSD condition into a buying decision

A healthy but budget SSD is fine when the price reflects it. A critical SMART warning is not a small bargaining chip because failure can take your data and require reinstall work. Price a known replacement, cloning or reinstall time, and any missing heatsink before making an offer.
