Custom, pre-built, or used: which PC path fits you?
There is no universal winner. Each path trades money, time, warranty, and control differently, especially when you factor in Ontario delivery and resale value.
Custom build (DIY)
DIY (do-it-yourself) means you pick each part and assemble the PC yourself, or you hand a parts list to a small shop and they build it for you. You choose layout and cooling: a big air cooler (heatsink and fan on the CPU) or an AIO (all-in-one) liquid cooler (pump, tubes, and radiator sold as one sealed kit, no custom plumbing). That path usually means easier upgrades later (standard motherboards, PSUs (power supplies), and cases that follow common sizes) and stronger resale because buyers recognize name-brand parts. Trade-offs: time, troubleshooting if something arrives DOA (dead on arrival: broken out of the box), and you are your own support unless you RMA (return merchandise authorization: send a faulty part back to the manufacturer for a warranty swap). Best if you like tinkering or want a specific look.
Pre-built new
Pre-builts are a simple way to get a brand-new PC at a fair price: one warranty, one invoice, and zero cable anxiety. Watch for proprietary motherboards or PSUs (parts made only for that brand’s tower, so replacements and upgrades are harder) in some mass-market boxes. Those quirks can limit what you can change later. Always confirm the exact GPU (graphics card) model and PSU wattage (how many watts the power supply can deliver), not just “RTX gaming PC” on the sticker.
Used / secondary market
Used is often where value peaks: many setups sell for roughly half of what a comparable new box would cost, if you verify condition and specs. Risk is higher, so meet in person when you can and use a checklist. See our used PC inspection guide for benchmarks, temps, and how to confirm the hardware matches the listing.
Which should you pick?
- Want new gear with minimal fuss → pre-built from a reputable integrator or retailer.
- Want control, upgrades, and long-term value → custom DIY (do-it-yourself) or a boutique builder.
- Want maximum performance per dollar → used from a trusted seller (or our listings).
