Windows Reliability Monitor summarizes application failures, Windows failures, hardware errors, updates, and installations by day. It is a fast way to spot patterns before a purchase, but its stability index is not a hardware health score. Read individual events, compare dates with the seller's explanation, and reproduce current behaviour with targeted tests.

Open the timeline and expand recent days

Search Windows for “reliability history” and open View reliability history. Select days with red failure symbols and use View technical details for each event. Review at least the recent period visible on the machine rather than only today's clean column. Note when Windows was installed, major drivers changed, or applications began failing repeatedly.

Classify failures before drawing conclusions

An application crash can be limited to one game or utility. A Windows failure, unexpected shutdown, LiveKernelEvent, or hardware error deserves wider attention. Failed updates often reflect software or network issues, not defective parts. Record the faulting application, problem event name, code, bucket details, and timestamp so you can connect it to a component or workload.

Look for recurrence and timing
