DDR5 RAM Shortage 2026: Ontario Buyer’s Guide

Memory prices jumped again in early 2026. If you are building, upgrading, or shopping used in Ontario, here is how to pick the right capacity without overpaying for hype.

Why DDR5 prices are rising again

Global DDR5 supply tightened in 2026 as AI and server demand pulled fab capacity away from consumer kits. Ontario retailers and marketplace sellers adjusted quickly: popular 32 GB (2×16 GB) kits that felt reasonable last year now sit noticeably higher. Prebuilt and used gaming PCs with RAM already installed look stronger on value because you are not buying sticks at peak retail.

If you see our site banner about locking prices in, that reflects real inventory bought before the latest wave. Waiting for a deep sale is risky when lead times stretch and restocks arrive smaller.

16 GB, 32 GB, or 64 GB for gaming?

16 GB still runs many titles, but background apps, Discord, and browser tabs eat headroom fast. For a new build in 2026, treat 32 GB as the default sweet spot for 1440p gaming, streaming, and mod-heavy games. 64 GB is for video editing, local AI, or heavy multitasking, not typical gaming alone.

On the used market, verify the kit is DDR5 (not DDR4) and note the rated speed. A complete platform mismatch means replacing the motherboard too, which changes the math entirely. Our RAM and SSD guide covers DDR4 vs DDR5 and when speed actually matters in games.

Upgrade sticks vs buy a complete PC

Adding RAM to an older DDR4 box can still make sense if the GPU and CPU are fine. On AM5 or Intel 14th/15th-gen platforms, paying surge pricing for DDR5 may push you toward a ready-built system where memory is already bundled at a saner total cost. Sellers listing “32 GB DDR5” without model numbers deserve extra questions; see our used PC inspection checklist before you meet up.

Practical Ontario shopping tips

Compare total system price, not RAM alone. Factor in Ontario tax and delivery if you are outside the GTA. If you are selling a PC with leftover DDR4, disclose capacity and speed clearly; buyers will discount for unknown kits. Questions on a specific listing? Message us with the specs and we will tell you if the RAM story matches the asking price.
